Construction of a 1 GW wind farm in Kazakhstan moves to the next stage

The 1 GW Wind Power Plant (WPP) construction project in Zhambyl Oblast is moving to the next stage of practical implementation.

Within the framework of the official visit of the President of France Emmanuel Macron to Kazakhstan, a Joint Venture Agreement was signed with Total on the project of construction of a 1 GW wind power plant. The project participants are Total (60%), Samruk-Kazyna JSC (20%) and NC KazMunayGas JSC (20%).

The document was signed in the presence of the Head of State Kasym-Jomart Tokayev and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The agreement formalizes and defines the basic decision-making mechanisms for joint venture management, budget approval, capital expenditures, dividend distribution and other matters.

A 1 GW wind power plant will be built in Mirny settlement in Zhambyl region using a 300 MW/600 MWh electricity storage system.

“Total is one of our key partners. “KazMunayGas” aims to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between our companies”, – said M. Mirzagaliyev.

In November 2022, in order to implement this project, Samruk-Kazyna JSC, NC KazMunayGas JSC and Total Eren signed an Agreement on the basic conditions of the project implementation.

The construction and commissioning of the 1 GW wind farm contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint as well as the realization of the ROK’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

The project is also an important step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and France in the field of energy, renewable energy and green technologies, as provided for in the relevant Intergovernmental Agreement of November 2022.
